HWY 421 EXCESSIVE CURVES – Hwy. 421 between Bristol and Mountain City—while a federally number highway—-is rather narrow, very curving and getting known as The Striped Snake. It’s a great road for motorcyclists. It isn’t fun for people driving minivans or sedans. Contrary to GPS, it takes the same amount of time to come to the inn via Damascus, VA or Elizabethton, TN. NOT recommended after dark, when you are tired, if you tend to get car sick or in the snow.
NEW Hwy. 91 BYPASS: This new road may not be on your old map or older GPS. Traffic is automatically routed onto it when southbound on Hwy. 91 coming from Virginia. When it ends, you must turn LEFT to arrive at the 67-421 intersection near the inn, NOT RIGHT as shown on old maps and older directions.
BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION ON HWY. 421 – Bridge construction on Hwy. 421 south of Mountain City is beginning in Spring, 2013. The usual procedure is a traffic light which regulates one-way traffic while one lane is rebuilt. Delays are usually only a few minutes. Most bridges take one year to complete.
HWY. 321 SOUTH OF BLOWING ROCK – Construction has begun again to widen this road all the way to Blowing Rock, NC. Some delays possible as construction progresses. If blasting is required, signs will be posted. Usually it occurs Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12 noon to 2 pm.
