A Cottage in the Woods is a freestanding, rental house which will sleep up to 7 persons. Bring your kids, dog, and friends. It can be your home away from home.
It is a self catered (no meals served) vacation home which is simple, complete and relaxing. This is the place to get away NOT the place to stay connected. (Sorry, no wifi). It’s not for everyone, just the few who appreciate the woods, the snows, the distance from maddening crowds, the time to turn off clocks and deadlines and for those who need to replace urgency with reconnection. Here is a place to share time with loved ones and a closeness to Nature.
This casually-decorated, has three bedrooms and two standard baths, a fully equipped kitchen, spacious living-dining combo, deck, picnic table under the trees, a one car garage and a very wooded, private location just eight miles north of Mountain City and nine miles to the Virgina Creeper Trail and Trail Days in May in Damascus, VA.
The cottage is 1300 sq .ft., fully furnished from linens to pots and pans, DISH TV, VCR, DVD player, some child-oriented tapes/disks and a gas-fired stove, as well as central heat. Most major brands of cell service works perfectly at the cottage; it is not equipped with wifi (available at local fast food shops). Some bedrooms have air conditioning, although given the mountain weather, it is rarely needed.
Under the trees spread out a picnic on the picnic table. In winter you’ll find saucer-type sleds in the basement. In summer, hike the old logging trails behind the house which lead to the Iron Mountain Trail (an Appalachian Trail-type route). There is additional parking (for larger and multiple vehicles) across the drive.
The location is ideal:
An easy drive of about 28 miles to Bristol Motor Speedway and only 8 miles to the Virginia Creeper Trail. It is north of Mountain City, TN, off Hwy. 91–now less than 7 miles via the new Hwy.91 bypass. The rental house is 2 miles off the main route between Damascus and Abingdon, VA. Nearby attractions include the new Laurel Creek Trail, Jefferson National Forest, Cherokee National Forest, Gentry Creek Falls, Mount Rogers and Grayson Highlands State Park (a fabulous location for scenery and finding the miniature horses–bring apples!)
We offer a nice casual smaller house with wood siding outside and comfortable furnishings (even original art) inside.
As they say…. Nothing fancy… a wonderful place to relax.

Gather in the living-dining-kitchen area with a bay window overlooking the woods. Lounge on the leather sofa, kick back, bring your favorite board game or grab the rocking chair and read a book. BBQ in the yard or hike up the old logging road to “discover” an ancient spring which still serves nearby houses in time of emergency.
The dinette table features teak chairs under a ceiling fan. The bay window frames a sunny view of the woods. A deck overlooks the front of the house. Deer are often spotted just outside. (We permit hunting on our 30 acres; please ask first so we can notify the other tenant on the property.
